Findings from one of the world’s leading authorities on fats and oils,

Dr. Mary Enig, a Ph.D. nutritionist/biochemist has undertaken much of the coconut oil research in more recent years. Dr. Enig has classified coconuts as a "functional food," which provides health benefits above and beyond the basic nutrients. She has specifically identified lauric acid as a key ingredient in coconut products.

The Benefits of Coconut Oil for Alzheimer's Patients

Alzheimer's Home Care Fort Myers, FL - Comfort Keepers

My husband Steve, now 61-years-old, has early onset Alzheimer’s disease. In May 2008, while he was screening for clinical trials, I came across information about a potential treatment in development: AC-1202, now called Axona.
Alzheimer's Disease: What If There Was a Cure?As I learned about the potential treatment, I learned that consuming medium chain triglycerides (derived from coconut oil) resulted in improved cognition in about half of the persons with Alzheimer’s or Mild Cognitive Impairment in their studies.
So, I gave my husband Steve some coconut oil. He had a dramatic response with a remarkable improvement in clock drawing and in his memory testing. Two months later, Steve continued to improve and other people confirmed that it was not my imagination.
Steve ‘s dramatic improvement began on the very day he started taking coconut oil. This was consistent with results of the first Axona study in which nearly half of the people had improved memory scores after taking just one dose of Axona.
Since we had changed nothing else in the months prior to or immediately after starting coconut oil, it ‘s reasonable that it was the cause for his improvement.
The way Steve explains the change he experienced, it was like the light bulb came back on the day he started taking coconut oil.
Why is Coconut Oil Beneficial to Alzheimer ‘s Patients?
One important feature of Alzheimer’s disease is that the brain gradually develops insulin deficiency and resistance. As a result, glucose (which is the usual fuel for brain cells) cannot enter the neurons, so the neurons malfunction before eventually dying.
But there may be a way to help alleviate that problem.
Medium chain fatty acids are converted in the liver to ketones. Those ketones can serve as an alternative to glucose, which means they may potentially help cells stay alive and function better.
Beyond Alzheimer ‘s
Increased ketones can also benefit people suffering from other diseases, such as Parkinson ‘s, ALS (Lou Gehrig ‘s), multiple sclerosis, Duchenne muscular dystrophy, autism, Down ‘s syndrome, and Huntington ‘s chorea. Ketones can also serve as an alternative fuel for other cells in the body that are insulin resistant or cannot transport glucose, and could potentially lessen the effects of Diabetes I or II on the brain and other organs.
So What ‘s the Problem?
Medium chain triglycerides are made in the human mammary gland. But other than that, humans do not make medium chain fatty acids–so we must acquire them from foods.
Unfortunately, most Americans consume oils that don ‘t contain any medium chain fatty acids. But the good news is that medium chain triglycerides make up 70% of the saturated fats in coconut oil.

Fostering Hope in the Battle with Alzheimer's Disease

Book Review: The Dynamite Story of Alzheimer's Recoveries
by Allen K. Golden, BA Ed
Reverse Alzheimer's Disease? Yes! It can happen!
by
Lisa Davis (Council Bluffs, IA)
After conducting extensive research the author found that Alzheimer's Disease effects can be indeed turned around. There are cases cited where people who had been diagnosed with Alzheimer's Disease took not only prescribed medicines but also simple treatments available from health food stores. Amazing how in just a very short period of time people were able to go back to productive lives!
This book offers real hope which can be experienced in such a simple process. I really like the appendix resources where tracking can be done of dosages and progress. Also the caregiver's resource was very nicely done. The easy to understand language of this book helped me versus too much technical information to sift through. There is a lot of technical information which is then explained in layman's terms.
I highly recommend this book! I read the entire book in a day because it was just that interesting! Also, my father had Alzheimer's and if I had this information before now I could have helped him. He died of cancer but the alzheimer's showed up in most areas of his life.
About the Author Allen Golden is a man who has experience with healthy alternatives to traditional medicine. When he learned how it is was possible to combat Alzheimer's Disease he moved forward to find out more. Spending countless hours doing medical research, Golden was able to find significant journal articles and other information to shed light on his research. Knowing that it is now possible to treat Alzheimer's and many other diseases with some very simple ingredients, along with pharmaceuticals, he had to share the wealth of his findings. Once the fire was in his heart he simply had to find more information to support this theory.
It is his sincere hope that people who are battling Alzheimer's and other diseases will be able to try alternatives and find success. While there are no absolute guarantees, these findings foster hope in the never-ending battle with Alzheimer's Disease.

After previous claims as an antiseptic, AIDS cure, anti-infective, cholesterol-basher, and remedy for various aches and pains, coconut oil is now being hailed as a possible miracle cure for Alzheimer’s.

The American physician, who has been dubbed “Dr. Coconut” for his tireless research into and championing of coconut oil’s healing properties, is back in the country bringing the latest breakthrough in the management of Alzheimer’s and other neurological conditions.

Dr. Bruce Fife presented his evidence at the ongoing 10th Coconut Festival in Mandaluyong City,  relating the remarkable recovery of Steve Newport, 58, from five years of progressive dementia after just 35 days of taking virgin coconut oil (VCO).

Stop Alzheimer's Now!: How to Prevent & Reverse Dementia, Parkinson's, ALS, Multiple Sclerosis & Other Neurodegenerative DisordersFife has written all about it in his book, “Stop Alzheimer’s Now.”

Fife has established a nonprofit organization, Coconut Research Center, to educate the public on the health and nutritional aspects of coconut. He has documented his researches in two books, “Coconut Cures” (2005) and “Coconut Water.”

Discover Coconut Oil: THE Healthiest Fat Choice on the Planet

Coconut oil is no fad! Coconut-eating cultures in the tropics have consistently lower cholesterol than people in the U.S. For thousands of years, the coconut has been used to keep people in the tropics healthy and lean. Why is coconut oil so special among the others? Research continues to confirm that coconut oil has many incredible heath benefits.

Our re-discovery of this healthy choice started in the 1930's when Dr. Weston Price ventured to the South Pacific Islands. There he discovered healthy and trim islanders. Their diets were naturally high in coconut products. Despite the 30-60%  high fat concentration of their total caloric intake from fully saturated coconut oil, heart disease was virtually non-existent. Coconut oil was found to balance the thyroid function and normalize cholesterol levels important for a healthy heart. Researchers began to realize that coconut oil did other things including help to support the immune system, cut body fat, fuel the brain and provide a boost for metabolism.

Coconut in one form or another helps to promote weight control by increasing the metabolic rate.  What is coconut oil? One reason for coconut oil’s health benefits, is that it’s rich in lauric acid which converts in your body to monolaurin – a compound also found in breast milk which is easily digested and strengthens the immunity. It raises the body’s metabolism and fights off pathogens such as viruses, bacteria, parasites and fungi. Capric acid, another coconut fatty acid present in smaller amounts, is also a anti-microbial component. Yet, coconut oil does not harm the "friendly" bacteria which is needed for a healthy digestive system. Moreover, coconut oil consists primarily of medium-chain triglycerides (MCTs) which are easily metabolized by the body so you have less fat build up. Weight management is not easy until you realize that when you eat the RIGHT kind of fat, your body will burn fat!

For internal health benefits use coconut oil for cooking. Coconut oil improves digestion and absorption of other nutrients including vitamins, minerals, and amino acids. It is therefore helpful to enhance overall health for people in general but, especially for pregnant women, nursing mothers, the elderly, people with digestive disturbances and athletes seeking to boost their energy, endurance, as well as, physical and athletic performance. By the way, among the many good reasons for using coconut oil, compared to other oils, coconut oil has the highest smoke point which allows it to withstand higher cooking temperatures and maintain its structural integrity. From a scientific health viewpoint, it seems as though coconut oil has enough in it to make it worth while to consume on a daily basis.

“I personally take four tablespoons of coconut oil per day, either on my salads, in my cooking or in my cups of green tea. I will not go a day without coconut oil.”
~Supermodel, 28, Miranda Kerr known for her organic lifestyle which she believes contributes to her glowing skin and her always hydrated hair. Aussie Miranda is married to Lord Of The Rings actor Orlando Bloom, 34. She gave birth to their son Flynn in January, credits Tahitian noni juice and coconut oil for her supermodel glow.

“I’ve been drinking it since I was 14, and when I’ve got a long day ahead of me, it’s the one thing I can’t live without,”
the Daily Mail quoted her as telling Australia’s Cosmopolitan magazine.

So we find that coconut oil can help us internally and externally! For external benefits include coconut oil as a massage oil or conditioner. Coconut oil helps support the natural chemical balance of the skin. Rubbed into the skin, it penetrates and nourishes the skin including hair. Coconut oil has no harmful or discomforting side effects, is completely non-toxic and is a safe alternative to lotions and other oils. Coconut oil softens the skin and helps relieve dryness and flaking especially if you have  symptoms associated with psoriasis, eczema or dermatitis. Interestingly, we also find individuals using coconut oil to help tame their acne. Apparently, the two powerful anti-microbial agents, capric acid and lauric acid, found in coconut oil provide some anti-bacterial properties which help eliminate the bacterium turned rogue, Propionibacterium acnes, thought to be a possible agent responsible for acne and pimples.

Medical Benefits of Coconut Oil

The high saturated fat content in coconut oils have many dietitians cringing at the thought of their patients supplementing with this fatty food. However medical researcher Dr. Mary G. Enig reports that coconut oil is misunderstood. At a presentation given to the Asian and Pacific Coconut Community, Enig states that people that habitually consume coconut oil tend to have lower cholesterol levels, healthier livers and more efficient immune cells compared to those that seldom eat coconut oil.

Weight Loss

Losing weight and keeping it off is a struggle for many adults living in the United States. Cutting calories and consuming coconut oil can help you lose weight reports Marie-Pierre St-Onge of McGill University. In a paper published in the March 2002 issue of the "Journal of Nutrition," St-Onge notes that the unique fats found in coconut oil -- Medium-Chain Triglycerides -- can help treat or prevent obesity by reducing appetite, boosting metabolism and upping the activity of fat burning cells.

How We Discovered this Unique Oil

Transporting organic coconuts far away from the pollution of any city or roads in the rural mountain areas of Mt. Banahaw in the Philippines, in preparation to make Tropical Traditions Gold Label Virgin Coconut Oil.

Article by Brian Shilhavy, Founder, Tropical Traditions, Inc.

When I first read about the wonderful benefits of coconut oil, I asked my wife Marianita, who grew up on a coconut plantation in the Philippines, if there was a more natural way to extract the oil from the coconut, so that we didn’t have to buy the refined coconut oils found in all the stores in the Philippines. She said there was a method the older generation used to extract the oil by grating the fresh coconut, extracting the coconut milk, and then letting the coconut milk stand in a covered container for about 24 hours. After about 24 hours, the oil naturally separates from the water producing a crystal clear oil that retains the full scent and taste of coconuts. So we started making our coconut oil that way and using it for our cooking needs with our three children. We couldn’t believe how wonderful it tasted, and how great we felt. We had been living on Mt. Banahaw in the Philippines for almost two years by that time, and in the year 2000 telephone service was provided to our rural farming community, allowing me to put up a website about our Philippine Herbs. I decided to also put our Virgin Coconut Oil up on the website, not really expecting people to order it because it was a bit expensive since we had to hire people to make the oil, and shipping cost a lot because of the weight. We were so surprised when people started ordering, and then re-ordering it because they felt so great after using it! They told us there was no other coconut oil like it on the market.

Before long we had businesses contacting us asking how to order it in bulk. So we discussed how we could mass produce this kind of oil, and almost abandoned the product because we didn’t want to lose the traditional way of making it. In the end, we decided to just keep making it the same way, by having others in our coconut community also make the oil the traditional way. Many of our producers are in areas so remote, that if they did not use their coconuts to produce Virgin Coconut oil for us, no one would buy their coconuts because it would cost too much to transport them to manufacturing plants. In these areas, the coconuts generally just fell to the ground unused until we started training people to make our Virgin Coconut Oil. We were the first ones to export Virgin Coconut Oil from the Philippines to the US market. The success overwhelmed us.

Today, more than 7 years later, there are other companies now selling coconut oil again in the US, most of them mass-produced by machines from dried coconut. But we are committed to time-honored traditional practices that have produced healthy coconut oil for hundreds, if not thousands of years. Our Gold Label Virgin Coconut Oil is still produced by hand, using the wet-milling process of extracting the oil from fresh coconuts. Our producers have learned a lot of things over the years, since most of them have been producing this oil for over 7 years now. They have learned how to pick out the best coconuts from each harvest that produce the best quality oil, for example. Independent laboratory analysis shows this to be one of the highest quality coconut oils on the market, having the highest levels of antioxidants. This enhanced Virgin Coconut Oil is now in the US market under the Tropical Traditions Gold Label brand. It meets our strictest standards to earn this designation. Today when you buy Tropical Traditions Gold Label Virgin Coconut Oil, you are buying the highest quality coconut oil we have to offer, and it is still made by hand and benefiting families in the rural areas of the Philippines where the coconuts grow.

Coconut Oil: A Miracle in a Jar?

Full article by Kenda Robertson
"Even though coconut oil has been used as cooking oil for thousands of years, it has gotten a bum rap in the last 20 years or so."

The campaign to demonize saturated fat found in coconut oil started in the 1980s when American industry farmers, who were unable to grow and make a profit from coconuts, decided to wage a public relations war against tropical oils in favor of polyunsaturated fats they could produce and promote such as flax seed, canola, soybean, safflower, corn, and other seed and nut oils.

Their reports have claimed that saturated fats are linked to high cholesterol and heart disease, multiple sclerosis and other ailments. Yet, people who live in tropical climates and eat a diet high in coconut oil are healthier, have less heart disease, cancer, and colon problems than unsaturated fat eaters!

Coconut oil actually lowers cholesterol, is anti-aging and helps people lose weight because of its ability to stimulate the thyroid.

Since the 1960s, researchers have been aware the properties of the medium chain fatty acids/triglycerides found in coconut oil destroys microorganisms such as bacteria, yeast, fungi and viruses.

In 1987, Lim-Sylianco published a 50-year literature review showing that in colon and breast cancer, coconut oil is far more protective than unsaturated oils. For example: 32% of corn oil eaters became afflicted with colon cancer while only 3% of coconut oil eaters acquired the disease.

Coconut oil is also more stable than unsaturated oils. Coconut oil shows no evidence of rancidity even after a year at room temperature. Not so with unsaturated oils which become rancid very quickly.

Another great use for coconut oil is that of a face and body moisturizer. It can clear acne and soften wrinkles at the same time. Eczema sufferers can find relief with this pleasant-smelling, non-greasy emollient.

Is Coconut Oil a Superfood?

It's all the buzz ... coconut oil is one of the latest in the discovery of "superfoods" in the western world

At Raw Aura, a restaurant in Mississauga, Ontario, executive chef Douglas McNish uses coconut oil for all of his desserts. Coconut oil:
  • Regarded as healthiest fat on the face of the planet
  • Boost your metabolism, helping you burn calories at a higher rate
  • Increases your good cholesterol
  • Has anti-viral and anti-bacterial properties which would help your immune system
  • Best for cooking because it has a very high smoking point, so it won't burn; therefore no carcinogens
McNish is sold on coconut oil, saying not only does it make food healthier, it tastes great too.
"It's also really good for people who work out. If you are going to have a pre-workout shake or smoothie, (coconut oil) is digested very easily and is great for sustained energy,"
~Laurence McMulkin, holistic nutritionist, Beaches Wholesome Food Store in Toronto

The Truth About Saturated Fats and Coconut Oil

"Clearly, a lot of confusion and contradictory evidence exists on the subject of saturated fats, even among health care professionals."
The reason? All saturated fats are NOT created equally.

Unsaturated fats such as vegetable and seed oils are artificially manipulated and transformed into saturated (trans) fats through a process called hydrogenation. The hydrogenation process damages the molecular structure of the unsaturated fats by adding hydrogen atoms during the heating process which produces a rancid, thickened oil. There is no controversy regarding the health dangers of artificially created saturated fats.

However, we generally assume that if one form of saturated fat is bad for you, then all saturated fat must be bad. Right? WRONG! Nothing could be further from the truth!

Consider the Pacific islanders who receive 30-60% of their total caloric intake from naturally occurring, fully saturated fat in coconut oil. Multiple studies on these tropical cultures have shown that ANY kind of harmful effect including the rate of cardiovascular disease is nearly non-existent!
"Back in the 1930's, a dentist named Dr. Weston Price traveled throughout the South Pacific, examining traditional diets and their effect on dental and overall health. He found that those eating diets high in coconut products were healthy and trim, despite the high fat concentration in their diet, and that heart disease was virtually non-existent.

Similarly, in 1981, researchers studied populations of two Polynesian atolls. Coconut was the chief source of caloric energy in both groups. The results, published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, demonstrated that both populations exhibited positive vascular health."
Besides being a naturally occurring and undamaged saturated fat, almost 50% of the fat content in coconut oil is a health promoting fat ingredient rarely found in nature called lauric acid. Our body converts lauric acid into monolaurin which destroy lipid coated viruses, various pathogenic bacteria and protozoa such as giardia lamblia.

For frying, use coconut oil since it has the highest heat threshold compared to all other oils and is stable enough to resist mild heat-induced damage.

Coconut oil is more than 50% medium-chain fatty acids (MCFAs), also called medium-chain triglycerides (MCTs). MCFAs are easily digested, thus putting less strain on your digestive system. Your body sends MCFAs directly to your liver to be converted into energy which actually help stimulate your body's metabolism and promote weight loss.

Coconut oil is considered so nutritious and easily digestible that you will find it being used in baby formulas.

Tempura-Style Coconut Shrimp

10-12 large fresh or frozen shrimp (if frozen, thaw quickly in a bowl of tepid water)
1/2 cup regular white flour
1 tsp. baking powder
1/4 tsp. salt
1/4 tsp. cayenne pepper (to make your shrimp spicy)
1 egg
1/3 cup ice water
1/2 cup dry shredded unsweetened coconut
1 cup coconut oil

PREPARATION:
Remove shells from shrimp, but leave tails on for easier cooking and eating. Set aside.
Make the batter by first mixing the dry ingredients together: flour, baking powder, salt, and cayenne pepper (if using).
Crack the egg into the flour mixture, then add the ice water, stirring to break the yolk and form a fairly smooth batter (don't worry if there are a few small lumps).
Deep fry shrimps at about 375 F, until they are brown.

Serves 4 as an appetizer, tapas plate, or party food.
Excellent eaten on its own, or served with a dip. ENJOY!
